Well It was 19 degrees when I got up this morning. I knew the deer would be moving. I sat there last night and had a doe walk out right in front of my stand and was hoping she'd still be in the area and dragging bucks with her.
Well I got to my stand exactly when it became light enough to turn the head lamp off. I climbed the tree and gave two soft grunts and a doe bleat and immediately heard movement on the right side of the small greenfield I was over looking. It's pretty thick in there but sure enough the movement turned into a nice looking 6. He came past at 35 yards to the right of me and then walked around behind me at 25 yards. He walked around in that thick stuff for a few minutes before leaving the way I had come in.
Well an hour and a half later The wind has come up and it's getting hard to hear. Well between gusts I hear what may be a deer on the left. As I stood up the biggest buck I have ever seen comes running into view right at me. I get the bow off the holder just as he stops right at the bottom of my stand. I go to pull the bow back and the release is gone. Horrified I remember I put it in my hand muff to get warm next to the Hot Hands!
As I fumble around trying to get my shit together The Buck looks over his shoulder the way he had come and then runs underneath me on hi way to God knows where.
As my mind is trying to comprehend what happened, 2 collared dogs come through hot on the, Once in a Lifetime Buck's trail. I sat down in disbelief and felt like jumping over the rail of my climber.
Such is Life!
